Graphics quality was typical for monochrome lasers, which makes it good enough for internal business use, including things like PowerPoint handouts. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts or need a printer for demanding desktop publishing applications, the P1006 should handle any text you need to print. I should also mention that some fonts that didn't qualify at 6 points were still easily readable at that size. Only one highly stylized, hard-to-print font needed 10 points to qualify as well formed. The vast majority of our test fonts were easily readable, with well-formed text at 8 points and some fonts passing the test at 4 points. Text quality was a touch below par for a laser, but still good enough for most business, school, or personal uses-and better than almost any ink jet can provide. But it's also noticeably slower than the somewhat pricier OKI Printing Solutions B4400, at 7:19, or HP's own LaserJet P1505, at 7:09. That's faster than the slightly more-expensive Samsung ML-1630, which took 9:55.

I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing, at a total of 8 minutes 59 seconds. The P1006's 17-page-per-minute engine is slow by today's standards, even for a personal laser printer, but fast enough so as to rarely leave you waiting, and faster than most ink jets. The installation steps themselves are familiar: removing the packing materials, loading paper, letting the software install, and plugging in a USB cable when the software tells you to. It's admittedly a matter of taste and working habits, but HP should provide both options and let you pick the one you like.
Some people may find this helpful, but I'd rather have printed instructions to work from. Rather than include a printed setup guide in the package, HP put the instructions-which include animations-on the installation disc. Setting up the P1006 is fairly typical for a low-end monochrome laser, although the presentation of the setup instructions isn't.
If you print on different types of paper very often, this may be a very welcome convenience. The tray lets you print on special paper-checks, for example-without having to remove the standard paper from the main tray or feed each page by hand. On the other hand, the P1006 helps make up for its low capacity with a 10-sheet multipurpose tray, a nice touch on a low-cost printer. If you print more than 30 pages per day, you'll have to refill the tray often enough for it to become annoying. Unfortunately, the small size goes hand in hand with a low paper capacity-just 150 sheets for the main tray. At just 7.6 by 13.7 by 8.8 inches (HWD) and only 10.3 pounds, it's both smaller and lighter than many ink jets. If one of your key requirements for a printer is that it doesn't take up much space, consider the P1006 a prime contender. The P1006 is impressively small for a laser. However, it's a little short on bang for the buck, which makes it less attractive than it could be. It even has both an external wired network option ($69.99 direct) and a Wi-Fi option ($99 direct) that connect through the USB port, so you can share it easily over a network. Its output quality is good enough for most business or personal use. It's fast enough so it won't keep you waiting overly long for most print jobs. It's small and light enough to be a comfortable fit in a home office or on a desktop in a large company. In many ways, the HP LaserJet P1006 Printer ($179.99 direct) is an attractive choice as a personal monochrome laser.
